Personally, I believe that...
Ghosts, or "spirit people", are the eternal and immortal
souls of mortally-incarnated beings whether they be dead
or yet living incarnate in the flesh. And while the soul,
like God, lives forever, having no beginning & no ending,
the physical body, in its fallen, carnal, "Adamic" state,
is born, lives and dies in the harsh climate of its sins.
And that's how the sons and daughters of men have had to
be born, live, and die, for some 200,000 tropical years...
This means that most of us, as souls, have lived 100s of
physical lifetimes ever since. If this averages once per
mundane century, that's two thousand lives in this state.
One mortal lifetime is hard enough. Imagine 2000 of them!
At the moment of physical death, most souls move quickly
through the tunnel into the brilliant white & warm light
of the Gods; then into the heavenly and hellish realm of
their spiritual needs--for a time, until they get kicked
out of heaven (e.g., Lucifer) to incarnate in a new body,
in a new time and place generally upon the Earth, to wit.
This interim for soul's purging or cleansing of the soul
is loosely called Purgatory, although something has been
lost in the translation from ancient to modern times. It
is after looking forward and moving into the light, that
this purging of soul occurs, in preparation for its next
incarnation into the physical body. And because no man,
no soul, is an island unto himself, itself, respectively,
the circles of heaven and hell are burgeoning with souls,
and there is much interaction among and between them--as
needs be, with families, friends, enemies, familiars etc.
in heaven and hell, as birds of a feather flock together.
But some souls don't move into the light so quickly, and
become trapped in Limbo. These are generally those souls
who fell victim to unlucky, starcrossed lives and deaths,
as well as those who were the perpetrators of evil deeds.
As victims, discarnate ghosts can't help feeling resentful
and unforgiving against whoever or whatever they attribute
their prior severe life experiences and painful deaths to.
They can blame their problems on God, a person, or a group.
In other words they choose to keep looking back into their
traumatic past, keeping them trapped in a near-earth realm
of the low (i.e. afflicted, impure, maligned) astral plane.
Similarly, the evildoers, the guilty who committed violence
etc. against their victims without cause, they greatly fear,
and desperately seek to postpone, the future judgment which
awaits them, particularly once their victim(s) has forgiven
them for their former evil deeds which caused or contributed
to the aforesaid's suffering and/or eventual or sudden death.
Thus both victim and perpetrator share their mutual places
in the hellish realm of the low astral Limbo: one for fear
of the past, the other for fear of the future, both wholly
in the present. These are usually called "grounded spirits".
More often than not these troubled souls don't even realize
that they are physically dead. The really bad ones, those
who committed unspeakably evil deeds in life, i.e. violent
criminals, surrendered their humanity in life, and so they
typify horrible, inhuman and demonic apparitions in death.
Eventually, inevitably, inescapably, all souls are required
to enter the light -- the whiteness of oblivion, -- leaving
their former physical body and its life to the dust of time.
And so the Judgment comes and the books are opened, and each
soul reviews its former earthly existence in its crystalline
entirety, in crystal-clear remembrance from the first breath
of its physical life...all the way up until the death rattle.
Discarnate souls who have gone through the light, whether
they have incarnated into a new physical body yet or not,
are usually called souls in "visitation" when encountered
by living physical beings. Discarnate souls can visit more
lucidly, actively and easily than most incarnate souls can.
That's where an individual's psychic ability comes in, which
of course varies widely from person to person, and from soul
to soul, as from time to time, and from lifetime to lifetime.
The more sovereign a soul is the better their psychic ability.
It depends on which way a soul is looking as to what it sees.
Look forward and see the future, turn around and see the past,
all in the eternal present. Souls in visitation often visit
the places and times of their past for the fond memories they
cherish of a past lifetime and people they loved and enjoyed.
Others do so out of lingering vestiges of discontent, or both.
Living mortals do this in the dream state, even daydreaming,
but seldom become lucid or super-consciously aware of what's
going on. Sometimes, where the veil is thin, a "vortex" or
door opens between the physically living and the physically
dead. When this happens, it can come as much of a surprise
and be an unsettling experience for the unwitting discarnate
spirit person as it is to the unwitting physically-incarnate
spirit person when they happen to cross paths or "bump" into
each other, as it were.
Enjoy!
