My own experience suggests that "ghosts" are for the most part
non-volitional energy traces left by heavily charged and/or
repeated actions. They don't interact with people because there's
nobody there to interact with, essentially, only a repeating pattern of
some past action or feeling etc. Superstitious people sometimes project
all sorts of stuff onto them and imagine interactions, but for the most
part it's like encountering a tape recording of something that happened
a while ago (maybe quite a long while). They can have influences on
living people in the sense of making us feel unsettled or threatened,
particularly since the more active ones can draw energy from the living
(hence the famous "cold" spots associated with hauntings), and I always
do a cleansing ritual when I occupy a new home, for example, to
encourage these tape-loops to fade away.
If you keep encountering them, that tells me that you're particularly
sensitive to them (most people are not). Could be that part of your job
in this life is, as a scientist, to turn some serious scientific enquiry
in the direction of this phenomenon, bringing something new to it plus
the scepticism + open-mindedness of the true scientist to the
exploration? Everyone can sense various kinds of paranormal effects and
so on, but most of us close off recognition because it would just be a
distraction from our primary business in life. When we do accept the
input, it may mean that dealing with it using our current strengths is
part of the program.
Good luck, in any case.
