Would you believe it? The seer has once again managed to come through
on time with his Almanach for next year (2003). As before, he seems to
have been attending English cl***** in his new abode, but the
underlying style is very much as it always was... ;)

FOR THE WINTER
Those who go forth to search shall discover only what they expect to
find. [UN arms inspectors in Iraq never did discover anything of any
signifance]
The last week of December shall see Mars and Venus in conjunction in
Scorpio before moving slowly into Aquarius, thus strongly indicating
the possibility of war that may be waged in order to obtain what is
greatly desired, and yet that shall become tinged on both sides with a
certain amount of idealism. [Much talk of war at the time, and the
story, like the conjunction, went on, evolving from a mere 'war on
terrorism' to a kind of 'moral crusade' by the spring...]
There shall be many deaths of strange birds, the appearance of even
stranger men dressed in red, much travel, much exchange of gifts, many
family quarrels. [Would you believe it? -- this duly happened... at
Christmas!]
A well-known person with a quavering voice shall die in or near the
City of the Angels, to much public regret. [Hollywood actress
Katharine Hepburn died at 96, but not until June, and in Connecticut,
not Los Angeles!]
Those who would fight terror with terror shall be no more successful
than those who would fight war with war. [US failure to nail down Bin
Laden, despite brave words following 9/11]
Diseases shall lay low many of the old and the infirm. [New virulent
form of pneumonia known as SARS -- Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome
-- started spreading from Far East in early March]
Storms shall cause much havoc, and regions more used to warmth shall
endure much cold. [Severe storms across American mid-west at
Christmas: storms and floods across Europe in early January.]
Great leaders thinking to reveal their greatness by meeting each other
shall reveal their smallness by avoiding each other, then changing
their minds and meeting each other again. [Already half-fulfilled by
Blair and Chirac]
Volcanoes and earthquakes shall strike unexpectedly [new eruption of
Etna: several earthquakes already by the end of January].
A leader named after a fish shall make warlike preparations of which
he himself does not approve. [Colin Powell began to sound unexpectedly
hawkish by the end of January -- 'colin' being the French for a
coalfish or green pollack]
A case of marital discord shall excite much public interest. [?]
A mighty vessel shall be overwhelmed at sea. [Happens at least once a
month, but in particular?...]
The people of God shall be assailed by the people of God, who shall
reply in kind. [Continuing atrocities by the Palestians against the
Iraelis, and by the Israelis against the Palestinians]
Floods shall devastate large areas. [Huge floods in southern France in
January, as well as across much of the rest of Europe]
Those who talk of fighting terror shall merely create it. [Not GWB,
surely?!]
FOR THE SPRING
Those who say 'peace, peace' shall make war, war. [GWB again?]
The religious shall display their irreligion, and the spiritual their
lack of spirituality. [Was it ever otherwise?]
Many shall die. [No -- really?! Not in Iraq, surely?]
New planets shall be discovered by those who did not know of them, but
not by those who thought that they did. [Jupiter-type planet
discovered orbiting star HD 70642 re****ted by BBC on 3rd July 2003]
A large country thinking to dispose of a small country shall find that
small problems have turned into large problems. [USA invasion of Iraq
in April, with huge post-war reconstruction problems]
The disciples of a former prophet shall discover, yet not discover,
that they are disciples of somebody else. [Could that be in the
process of happening in a.p.n.?]
Those who thought spring had arrived shall realise that winter has not
yet left. [Was it ever otherwise?]
A new Xerxes shall discover that he is no better than the old Xerxes
[efforts of original US administrator in Iraq, Jay Garner, initially
resulted in worse living conditions for many Iraqis than under Saddam
Hussein].
Those who are sober shall be drunk with their sobriety, while those
who are drunk shall undergo sobering realisations about their
drunkenness.
FOR THE SUMMER
There shall be great heat, great drought, great fires, yet at the same
time unusual cold [massive fires in Arizona in June, unusually high
temperatures all across Europe and drought in southern Europe --
especially Italy -- in mid-July despite cold weather in Scandinavia,
an extreme heatwave resulting in huge forest fires all across southern
Europe and the west of North America in July/August].
A great metallic bird shall descend from the sky, killing many [116
killed in Sudan air-crash on 8th July].
There shall be great arguments, great protests and great riots [huge
and prolonged public demonstrations all over France at proposed
increase in official retirement age: riots in southern Iraq in
August].
Many shall travel vast distances, but shall return more discontented
with their lot than before [the experience seemed to be inexplicably
confirmed by returning holidaymakers!].
Despite advances in medicine, the blind shall not see very much, and
the deaf shall be pretty hard of hearing [curiously, this proved
true...].
A would-be Caesar shall discover that Caesars have to suffer not only
the glory, but also the fate of Caesars [dismissal of original US
administrator, Jay Garner, in Iraq].
Violent storms shall disturb the complacent [multiple cyclones all
across the American midwest in May: violent thunderstorms in southern
France and Spain in August].
One who is sought shall still not be found [continued failure to find
Bin Laden -- to say nothing of Saddam Hussein].
Some of those paid to serve the populace shall do them a great
disservice [evident lying by political leaders to persuade public of
case for war against Iraq?].
Many who thought to live for ever shall die [was it ever otherwise?].
FOR THE AUTUMN OR FALL
The weather shall be unusually warm in some parts where it was
expected to be cold.
The whole world shall be in fear of the crescent moon.
Fires shall continue to rage.
Books about a former prophet shall appear, in most cases without
adding much to the sum total of knowledge about him.
Ancient diseases shall return, and new ones spread.
Students shall discover that the world is an unfriendly place.
The harvest of some crops shall be unusually good, while others shall
be unusually bad. In either case, many animals shall die.
Where there was peace there shall be war, and where there was war
there shall be war.
At the end of the period, the quincentennial birthday of a former seer
shall be celebrated, though on the wrong date.
The end of the world shall be predicted, but not observed.
The ignorant shall believe that they know everything: the wise shall
know that they know nothing.
Indifferent to human concerns, the Earth shall continue to turn, and
the universe shall continue to unfold exactly as it is meant to.
